Be Careful Buying a Gaming Laptop...

The best gaming laptops in 2021 will have RTX 3060, 3070 and 3080 GPUs inside. But the naming is shady this year. Be informed.

  • I REALLY don't like how Nvidia is naming their laptop GPUs this year. It's going to be a much more complex purchase decision. What do you think is the solution? How do you think should they name their laptop GPUs?

    Dave2DDave2D2 개월 전
    • You have to learn mobile versions are weaker than desktop versions. Notebooks consume less energy, and it's challenging for cooling the system. Sometimes a desktop gpu has more and bigger fans than the whole system of a notebook. Notebook makers are playing with watts too. 60, 85, 115, 130, 140... Older chip with higher watt could be better than a newer chip with low watt. There are on the market some notebooks with new rtx 3600 which are bottlenecked by i5 cpus. This isn't the fail of nvidia. Don't be a wannabe pioneer if it is too risky and/or you don't gain any advantage! Before you buy a product search for reviews and tests, and look for the official details from the manufacturers, because vendors and marketing management often don't show important details of the products. Main components aren't everything! Poor thermal handling will slow down the system before it kills the gpu/cpu/battery/memory/ssd even the screen or the keyboard. "cpu/gpu boost" is a great marketing word, but if you don't want the melting down of your notebook, you must slow down your processors. It costs performance for stability. Rtx, i5, i7 ... mobile chips aren't like desktop chips with same names. I agree, naming conventions should be totally different. rtx 3060, rtx 3060 and rtx 3060 isn't enough while one of them is a desktop version with 170 watts, other one is a mobile chip with 115w, third one has 130w.

    • Yeah.... Dave like your videos but make sure you point out the strong points and say oh what this is trying to be. Case and point your Alienware m15R2/3 review. You complain about Alienware thermals but they runs their cpu/ gpu at a higher clock and watts. But when you look at the performance it’s some of the best. So it makes it important to have good cooling or not run it in a hot room . Then again Alienware has the best warranty. I have gotten my laptop replaced 2 times due to the heatsink not installed properly.

  • I think a similar thing is happening to CPUs for the ultrabook market. Companies are flexing Core i7 10th Gen everywhere, but people don't realise it's super weak compared to even desktop i5s and potentially i3s. It hurts me to see this rhetoric passed around everywhere.

  • People shouldn't listen to these people. None of the tech review channels actually know what the hell they are talking about. Dave recommended a legion y540 a while back, I purchased 1 a few days later. Had decent specs at the time, i5, gtx 1660ti, 1tb hdd, 256gb m.2, and 16 gigs of ram. I got it 2 days after ordering which was approximately a week after Dave uploaded that video only to be disappointed. Ubnboxed, powered on, repeated bsod during windows setup. Reflashed fresh windows, got through setup, immediately started getting bsods again, updated all drivers, same problem, updated bios, same problem, ran tests and scans nothing was failing but decided to try things anyway, replaced the m.2 with a 1tb samsung evo870, replaced the ram and after that I could use it for a few hours before another bsod restart and repeat. Lenovo released a bios update, installed and back to repeated bsods, usually within minutes of starting the system. Then the hdd just died. The entire system maybe ran for a collective 50 hours, most of which was me troubleshooting and testing fixes. Ordered a crucial 1tb ssd and replaced the hdd, was able to run about an hour at a time before getting bsods. Finally said screw it and decided to go with linux mint cinnamon. No more bsods though once in a while I swap the m.2 and try windows again and always get the same problems. A few months ago I purchased an Asus rog m15 i7 rtx2070 16gigs ram and 1tb m.2, only thing I've had to do with the rog is add a second m.2 for additional storage and it runs perfectly since purchase. Long story short they have no idea what they are talking about, they appear to get talking points from manufacturers and then tell people things are so much better than they are

  • Hey Dave ! I have a question on a laptop purchase. I have two options the Dell - G5 15.6" Gaming Laptop - 144Hz - AMD Ryzen 9 4900H - 16GB Memory - AMD Radeon RX 5600M - 1TB SSD or HP Omen 17.3” i7-10750H Gaming Laptop (RTX 2070/16GB DDR4/1TB HDD/256GB SSD/Win 10) The SSD in the omen can always be upgraded. I know there’s other computers out there but this is my two choices I don’t do a whole lot of gaming but when I do I would like to be able to play stuff like call of duty or other AAA titles at the highest settings not sure if this one would work but I really like it as well but I’m unsure if it would be able to play call of duty , Jedi fallen order etc. HP OMEN - 15.6” Gaming Laptop - AMD Ryzen 7 - 16GB Memory - NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 Ti - 1TB SSD - Mica Silver. Mostly would be for stuff like photo/video editing web surfing other types of productive work and watching Netflix KOworld etc. I like the look of the omen and the ips screen along with the graphics card but I’m still having a difficult time deciding. Which is the better choice based on specs and performance not pricing? Thanks

  • Damn dude! Thank you very much! I've seen the difference since i'm in a kind of "hot" country (in the caribean) and getting a lot of problems with cooling my gaming laptop even if i can play sometimes with airconditionning. I've bought the first ROG wich were like 1.34 inch and after i get a CLEVO at 1.75inch with a 300W for the alimentation. They both got te get used to heat in here. But the ROG Hero II with his 0.98 inch suffer a lot of heat. It's hard to push it on performance. I love ASUS but hard to buy a Griffin ( i love the style) or another CLEVO (kids are a budget) so no other solution than an Helios 700 that you covered well! And Thank you very much for the drawbacks on this laptop that not so many youtubers mentionned! Keep it on and Thank you again !

It is well known that thermals are a big issue when keeping things small and compact. Wtf does names have to do with it?

  • People want desktop performance in a laptop and it is impossible. In a race for sales the laptop makers are giving us specs and not good functional machines. I would love it if the reviews would include the noise level these things produce, the cooling is SO LOUD on some laptops, the noise level is louder than the speakers. They are just totally not gratifying to use on a plane, in the living room, or a meeting room, or really anywhere. With the noise they produce they dominate the space in a bad way. Gaming laptops as a whole are borderline unsafe. I mean they rival a hair dryer; they are hot and loud. 1 They should not produce so much noise as to cause hearing loss. My Gigabyte Aorus 7 produced a noise level of 87dB. The EPA states that an hour over 70dB can cause hearing loss. 2 They should not produce so much heat or exhaust heat that can cause burns. That Aorus blew 108 degree air with in a minute of being under a load. The CPSC states that that is not good. So, I have finally gotten rid of that horrible Ggiabyte Auros 7 and I am looking for another laptop to replace my aging Asus GL552.

Really powerful and really loud, but what I don't understand why thermals are so important as in why can't they make these GPUs and CPUs more efficient. Im an electrician and heat means inefficiencies. Why do computers pump out so much heat, I just was using my laptop on my lap, it was warm for web browsing, I hit render to process a photo and almost instantly it started burning my legs, it produced heat instantly no delay. That's a lot of power, I know of 1000w heaters on 240volts that don't even get that hot that quick
